OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Okaloosa County could soon be home to the largest artificial reef in our waters, but that decision is still pending.
County leaders have a contingent contract to purchase the S.S. United States, a historic ship that is one thousand feet long, more than 100 feet longer than the Titanic.
Under the waves of the gulf along Okaloosa County’s shoreline sits several other artificial reefs. If the S.S. United States is sunk, it will be the largest artificial reef in the world.
The ship has been docked in Philadelphia for nearly 30 years, but a district court judge has ordered it moved by September 12th.
At Tuesday’s commission meeting, commissioners were supposed to discuss the project, which is budgeted for $9 million. However, that agenda item has been pushed to the next commission meeting on the 17th so county leaders have more time to work out more details about the project.
