Penn State stood pat in the college football rankings after beating West Virginia in Week 1.
The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press top 25 poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. Penn State was ranked No. 8 in the preseason AP poll.
Penn State is ranked behind only Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Oregon, in that order. The Nittany Lions were ranked just above No. 9 Missouri and No. 10 Michigan.
Penn State is one of five Big Ten teams in the post-Week 1 poll, along with Ohio State, Michigan, No. 13 USC and No. 21 Iowa.
Penn State, fresh off its 34-12 win at West Virginia in the opener, earned more respect from the 62 sports journalists who vote every week in the AP poll. Penn State earned 1,146 points this week, up from 1,060 points in the preseason poll.
For those who might not know how the AP poll works, each voter submits a top 25. Each ranked team earns a specific amount of points based on where they’re ranked on each ballot. A first-place ranking is worth 25 points, and the points go down from there.
Typically, the AP poll will come out on Sunday afternoons. But with Florida State and Boston College playing on Monday night, closing out a Labor Day weekend slate of games, the release of the AP poll was pushed back until Tuesday afternoon.
Penn State was impressive in its resounding win over the Mountaineers. Drew Allar, Harrison Wallace III, Nick Singleton and the offense impressed. The defense was nasty. The Nittany Lions, after enduring a lengthy halftime lightning delay, won convincingly by 22 points as 7.5-point favorites.
Penn State will look to move to 2-0 on the season this weekend when it hosts Bowling Green. The Nittany Lions will kick off their home opener at noon on Saturday, airing on Big Ten Network.
