Richa Kar was born in Jamshedpur in 1980 into a middle-class family. She graduated from BITS Pilani and later worked for a company in Bengaluru. During this time, she realized the embarrassment women feel when buying lingerie. This realization led her to quit her job and present her business idea to her family.
Borrowing Money From Friends For Business
Richa didn’t have the money to start her business, so she borrowed from family and friends, collecting around ₹35 lakhs. With this, she launched Zivame in 2011, an online platform that allows women to buy lingerie from the comfort of their homes without any embarrassment. Despite facing initial resistance for leaving her job, her idea eventually made her family proud.
A Rs 1500 Crore Business
Initially, Zivame didn’t take off, but with the rise of the internet and technology, the business grew. Today, the platform offers over 5,000 lingerie styles, 50+ brands, and 100+ sizes. Zivame also provides services like “Try at Home” and fitting consultations, solving many problems for women from the comfort of their homes. In 2014, Richa’s remarkable work earned her a spot on Fortune India’s “Under 40” list.
