Cambodia’s National Assembly (NA), voted this morning to switch the positions of two key ministers. With a unanimous vote of 106 in favour, the NA approved a change in the composition of the Royal Government, with Huot Hak appointed as the new Minister of Tourism and Sok Soken taking over as Minister of Inspection.
The switch comes at a time when both ministries are facing growing responsibilities, with tourism rebounding strongly following the global pandemic and the Inspection Ministry grappling with increased scrutiny on governance and public services.
Hak, who previously led the Ministry of Inspection, brings his expertise in administrative oversight to the tourism sector.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economy, contributing significantly to the GDP and employment. As the country positions itself as a key destination in Southeast Asia, Hak’s leadership is expected to steer the sector toward further recovery and expansion.
Meanwhile, Soken, who previously served as Minister of Tourism, takes over as Minister of Inspection. Soken’s tenure at the tourism ministry was marked by an aggressive push to boost Cambodia’s tourism profile, particularly through the promotion of eco-tourism and the development of new tourist hotspots.
In his new role as Minister of Inspection, Soken is tasked with reinforcing government accountability and transparency. The Ministry of Inspection is responsible for overseeing public institutions, investigating cases of mismanagement, and ensuring compliance with national regulations.
