In line with increasing connectivity across the African continent, Uganda Airlines has added the new route of Abuja to its already existing flight routes.
With the airline reaching over 20 destinations, the flight to Nigeria’s administrative capital comes just one year after Uganda Airlines launched its air services to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.
On September 12, the inaugural flight service to Abuja departed from Entebbe at 4 pm, with a same-day arrival at Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 6:15 pm.
The flagship Airbus A330-800neo aircraft will operate the flights, which will link to the current service to Lagos, on Thursday and Sunday.
Speaking at the event, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamutaraki noted, “We are excited to launch our service to Abuja, Nigeria, and we’re thrilled because these flights are the second city in Nigeria after Lagos; so, it will be a combined flight. We will be using Airbus for the two routes and combined routes, and the flight number will be UR900. We take great pride in being alive today, witnessing this, and honouring our promise to both Uganda and Nigeria.
“Abuja is our second destination in Nigeria and the 14th overall in our network. Its launch underscores our continuing commitment to ease travel across Africa by providing efficient and affordable air services to facilitate business, tourism, and leisure travel,” Bamutraki added.
As a result, Uganda Airlines’ new service is important because it addresses the connectivity gap between the administrative capital of Africa’s most populous nation and East Africa.
“Through this service, travellers from Nigeria’s central, northern and northeastern regions can seamlessly connect to our services to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Mumbai, and Dubai, among others.”
Dignitaries such as the state minister for Transport Fred Byamukama, the Nigerian high commissioner to Uganda, Fehintola Adebowale Oyeyemi, and the director general of Civil Aviation Authority, Fred Bamwesigye, attended the event.
