Is it Ok to be a tourist photographer in your home state?

I have always resented being called a tourist, especially in Alaska. I’m always looking for a nontouristy thing to do to get away from the crowds and see things that others don’t. So, when my friend David Shaw asked me to co-guide a photography trip to Katmai National Park and the Kenai in July, I was wondering what it would feel like to be an official tourist. Spoiler alert: It was awesome.

Any baggage associated with the label of being a tourist was quickly replaced by the incredible opportunities and sights this trip presented. Sure, I wish there were fewer people, but then I also thought how great it was that so many people appreciate what our amazing state has to offer. In addition to the people physically in the state, millions more around the world visit our state virtually every year by following things like the bear cams at Katmai. The people I guided were incredibly appreciative and I realized how much I take Alaska for granted.
