EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Some East Lansing elementary schools are looking to encourage reading and good behavior with a new kind of tool
Students at Whitehills and Red Cedar Elementary Schools are excited to use their new book vending machine. In a few Mid-Michigan elementary schools, vending machines are now helping feed students’ minds—but not with food to eat; instead, with food for thoughts: books.
“I’m mostly excited to read comic books because I’ve already read all the books in the library that are a comic and graphic novels,” said 5th grader Joy Morgan.
From picture books to novels, various books are available in the machine for students to read.
“I’ll probably try to get any books that look interesting,” said 5th Clark Hubbard.
It works just like any vending machine and helps fuel students’ excitement to read.
“Seeing the kids’ faces light up when we unveil that vending machine and to know this will hopefully spur a lifelong love of learning and reading to go along with the great work the schools already do to foster that love,” said East Lansing Kiwanis Club board member Tom Wilbur.
Each book inside is the only one of its kind inside the machine. So, if students see a book they’re eager to read, they need to get it quickly by using a token.
“Some books are different than others,” said Elaine. “If you read a book you don’t really like, you can try a different series.”
Students can be rewarded with tokens to put in the machine for a book.
“It’s a way to reward behavior that we’re looking for and promote that not with food or candy or that kind of thing. It’s to reward it with a book,” said Deputy Superintendent for East Lansing Public Schools Glenn Mitcham.
A reward for good behavior. And a way to encourage students to be kind in class and keep reading.
“I read every day because reading helps me fall asleep at night,” Clark said. “I like reading because it’s like stepping into a new world.”
This will give students new and different perspectives as they continue to learn about the world around them. The schools will restock the book vending machines when the supply gets low. More book vending machines will be installed in East Lansing elementary schools by the end of the calendar year.
