A popular tourist attraction in the Cotswolds is due to host a history-themed event that is relevant to the very past it represents here in Gloucestershire. Chedworth Roman Villa is set to transport visitors back in time with its upcoming Roman Crafts Weekend on 28-29 September 28 and 29.
This event offers a glimpse into the intricate world of Roman craftsmanship, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the skills that shaped the luxurious lifestyle of the elite families of Roman Britain. Visitors to the National Trust site will be able to explore the art of mosaic-making comparing ancient techniques with modern methods.
This family-friendly event caters to history enthusiasts, craft lovers, and curious minds of all ages. Crafts Weekend offers an opportunity to engage with living history and gain a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship that underpinned Roman society. Visitors can treat themselves in the shop, bring a picnic or pick up something from the café.
“Creating mosaics is not just an art form; it’s a journey into history,” says Sadie Rowlands, master mosaicist. “Visitors will experience the joy of piecing together intricate designs, the mindfulness that comes with focussed craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of learning about the techniques used by Roman mosaicists.”

Kerrie Venner, a skilled weaver participating in the event, adds: “Weaving in the Roman style requires patience, skill, and a deep appreciation for artistry. Our demonstrations will showcase the intricate designs produced almost two thousand years ago.”
The event runs from 11am-4pm each day. Entry to the villa 10am-4:30pm. Normal admission charges apply, with free entry for National Trust members. No booking required.
