WEST BEND — The Washington County Board unanimously approved the creation of a new 4-H educator position during its Sept. 11 meeting, and on Thursday the county announced that the position was established to “double down” on enhancing existing 4H clubs and establishing new 4-H clubs in the direction of Automation, Innovation and Robotics (AIR) education.
“4-H has a record of success in Washington County with positively developing our youth,” Schoemann said in a news release. “I am pleased to express my support for 4-H and the social capital it creates in our community as adult volunteers work to teach our youth new skills.”
According to the release, the new position was created as part of changes the county made to its long-tenured agreement with UW-Extension, based off of recommendations from a community task force that met this past spring.
The task force determined the best way to serve county residents was to focus on post-secondary pathways and expanding access to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and AIR education access for youth, starting in grade school.
“The focus of new programming will include access to career exploration for students and parents through awareness building activities that support regional workforce needs,” the release said. “Specific efforts hope to complement Moraine Park Technical College’s Manufacturing, Automation and Robotics Lab and create laddering opportunities among our youth programming.”
