Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In anticipation of World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has ramped up its preparations with a series of engaging activities planned.
One notable initiative involved a hike to the Tacugama Waterfalls at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, bringing together staff from the Ministry, the National Tourist Board, the Monument and Relic Commission, tour guides, and various partners. This event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Sierra Leone’s natural beauty, promote domestic tourism, and highlight the critical role of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in conserving the forest reserve. Additionally, it sought to foster national unity and peace, which are vital for the tourism sector’s growth.
With this year’s theme being “Tourism and Peace,” the Ministry encouraged participants to wear white as a symbol of unity and harmony.
During the hike, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Tunis urged citizens to explore destinations like Tacugama, emphasizing that domestic tourism not only creates jobs but also enhances the nation’s dignity and protects its natural landscapes.
Bala Amarasekaran, Founder of Tacugama, expressed his gratitude to Minister Tunis and her team, stating that he has never felt as supported as he does under her leadership. He encouraged attendees to bring their families and friends to the Sanctuary and to share their experiences on social media to help promote tourism.
Permanent Secretary Edward Kwame Yankson commended the participants for their commitment and dedication during the hike. He encouraged everyone to adopt a tourism-centric mindset and implement sustainable environmental practices to ensure the industry thrives. MJB/24/9/2024
