Harrisonburg parents could bond with their children while enjoying a tasty breakfast on Friday morning.
Stone Spring Elementary School on Peach Grove Avenue hosted Donuts for Grownups. The event, sponsored by the school’s parent-teacher-student organization, allowed students to invite a parent or caregiver to have breakfast with them at school and meet their teachers.
Dr. Chris Booz, assistant principal of Stone Spring, said Donuts for Grownups is an excellent opportunity for families to come into the school and have a nice start to the day with their children.
“The goal for these events, for me, is to have families see how important they are to their students and their academic life,” she said. “It’s to have the three-pronged approach: it’s students, families, the school, we’re all working together to support kids.”
Guests were served Krispy Kreme donuts, coffee, and tea; children received free books.
The principal of Stone Spring, Norris Bunn, helped set up the tables of free books, which mostly were given to the school by families of the students.
“We get book donations throughout the year,” Bunn said. “As we get new books in, that means the old reading series needs a home. We make sure they get into the kids’ hands.”
Derek Chaudhuri, president of the PTSO, said the event was inspired by a similar one run by Cub Run Elementary School last year.
“They had a group called ‘Watchdogs,’” Chaudhuri said. “And they did an event for fathers with donuts. That’s where I got the idea from.”
Victor Caskill, a 9-year-old student, said he enjoyed the event, especially the donuts.
“My favorite is chocolate with sprinkles,” he said.
The next school event will be a movie night at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 1.
