A panel of community leaders in Crawford County will present updates on four important local projects Oct. 23 during the Chamber and Development Council Business Appreciation Breakfast.
Sponsored by Cobalt Credit Union, the breakfast will be held from 7-8 a.m. at the Stables at Cooper Ridge. The breakfast for the event will be prepared by Staley’s Catering.
CBD Executive Director Paul Plumb said the Business Appreciation Breakfast is one of the organization’s most popular events. He said those attending enjoy learning about the projects taking place in the county.
“I hope people walk away with an understanding of some of the events our office is involved with and an appreciation for the great things happening around the county. I’m excited to hear everything that’s happening here in Crawford County and what is planned for the future,” Plumb said.

“I’m excited for the event. It’s always a great way to connect with the community and our local businesses,” CDC Office Manager Mariah Nutt agreed.
Serving on the panel for the Business Appreciation Breakfast this year will be Crawford County Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Director Erin Muck, Denison City Manager Jessica Garcia, Denison School District Superintendent Kim Buryanek and Western Iowa Tech Community College Denison Campus Director Sandy Velasquez.
Muck will be discussing the remodeling and expansion project underway at Crawford County Memorial Hospital. Garcia will update people on the status of the Crawford County Wellness Center.
Buryanek will review the Broadway Elementary School remodeling project. Velasquez will talk about the WITCC Career Academy.
“This is a wonderful panel that will be reviewing some of the critical projects taking place in the area. More than $85 million worth of projects are currently underway in Denison and Crawford County,” Plumb said.
Along with the panel of speakers, the 2024 Volunteer of the Year will be recognized. The Volunteer of the Year award has been presented annually since 2013.
“There are so many projects that wouldn’t get done without all the local volunteers that step up and get involved,” Plumb said.
Last year, the Volunteer of the Year was Taylor Borkowski. The owner of The Cottage, Borkowski founded the Hot Summer Nights program and assisted with various other community events.
Borkowski is also a member of the Women in Business Impact Organization (WIBIO) and is active in her church.
