Kampong Cham City becomes the fourth Cambodian city to be declared as the smoke-free tourist city. The declaration was made by Minister of Tourism Huot Hak during a ceremony yesterday, at Kampong Cham Provincial Hall. The event was presided over by Un Chanda, Governor of Kampong Cham province, and a representative from WHO Cambodia.
According to Ministry of Tourism, the “Smoke-Free Tourist City” title is an official recognition for cities or districts that have successfully implemented smoke-free environments in tourism. This title is also acknowledged by the Smoke-free Cities Asia Pacific Network (SCAN), the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Minister noted that Kampong Cham City has achieved a significant milestone in the tourism sector by winning “Smoke-free Tourism City” title. He emphasised the importance of continuing to uphold smoke-free principles in tourism following the receipt of this title.
To ensure the sustainability of Kampong Cham as smoke-free city, the Minister recommended regularly raising awareness about the effects of tobacco products in public forums. He also urged for the promotion of lawas and regulations while continuing to operate as a model city to enhance tourism.
Dr Mom Kong, Executive Director of the Cambodia Movement for Health, said that Kampong Cham city has now joined the ranks of Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap as a smoke-free tourist destination.
He mentioned that Kampong Cham has implement regulations banning smoking in offices and public areas, as well as prohibiting cigarette advertisements, and the sale of cigarettes with packaging that highlights health risks.
He added that the ministry, along with partners, plans to evaluate additional cities and districts for this recognition.
Kampong Cham provincial governor Un Chanda said that winning this title will elevate Kampong Cham province’s profile, especially Kampong Cham City, making it more appealing to foreign tourists. In addition, this recognition is expected to increase tourist numbers and garner public support for tourism development and public health initiatives.
He also pledged to enhance collaboration with relevant ministries, stakeholders, and national and international organisations to ensure successful implementation of laws, sub-decrees, proclamations, and guidelines related to maintaining a smoke-free environment.
According to WHO, tobacco use results in over 15,000 deaths annually in Cambodia.
