The eagerly awaited sequel to the 2022 horror hit Smile is set to terrify audiences in cinemas from this Thursday, with early reviews already surfacing.
The film’s synopsis teases: “About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events.”
“Struggling under the weight of her growing fears and the demands of her high-profile life, Skye must confront her shadowy history to reclaim control before her life unravels completely.”
Critics are united in their acclaim for the sequel, lauding it as a worthy successor to the original blockbuster, reports the Mirror. One viewer expressed their thoughts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter: “Just stepped out of the #Smile2 screening and I’m shaken! Scariest movie of the year by a mile.
“Just pure unfettered horror that ups the ante in every way. Gory, mean, and heartbreaking. Oh, and Naomi Scott is coming for Toni Collette’s gig. I said what I said. #paramount”.
Another enthusiast praised: “SMILE 2 blew me away! An award-worthy step-up in every way to the original: magnificent cinematography, clever jumpscares, bloody, gnarly imagery and thematic depth surrounding grief, trauma and guilt. Career-best performance from Naomi Scott. 2024’s best horror film. Damn! #Smile2”.
One thrilled cinephile added: “Haven’t been that giddy seeing a premise executed to the fullest degree since Challengers. Parker Finn delivers an emotionally charged, mean spirited, delightfully bloody, impeccably shot sequel with #Smile2, and Naomi Scott here is one of the best performances of the year.”
Joining Naomi in the cast are You’s Lukas Gage, as well as Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner, and Miles Guiterrez-Riley.
Taking the helm again for this sequel is Parker Finn, who not only directed the first Smile film but also penned the screenplay for this follow-up. Meanwhile, Temple Hill Entertainment produced, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution duties.
The original Smile became a box office sensation upon its release two years back, raking in a staggering $217 million against a modest $17 million budget. Critics gave it a warm reception, leading to a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 79% from 192 views.
Smile 2 releases in cinemas tomorrow (October 17).
