Tirana, October 17, 2024 – Albania is moving ahead with its ambitious electric railway project, aiming to link Tirana, Durrës, and Rinas by the spring of 2025. The 39-kilometre line, financed by a €70 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will cut travel times significantly.
The journey between Tirana and Durrës will take just 22 minutes, while the trip to Rinas will be reduced to 12 minutes. The line will feature 11 stations and operate at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.
Prime Minister Edi Rama described the railway as a major step in modernising Albania’s transport network. He stressed that it will not only speed up travel but also provide a more sustainable and efficient option for daily commuters and tourists alike.
The government views the railway as crucial to enhancing connectivity and spurring economic growth. It forms part of a wider effort to upgrade the country’s infrastructure, with similar projects expected in the coming years.
