Nissan is set to add plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its Rogue SUV in the United States, though it’s unclear whether we’ll see this technology in its X-Trail twin.
The Rogue and X-Trail are closely related, though the former is built in the US in left-hand drive only while Australian-market examples of the latter come from Japan.
As Nissan has yet to reveal a plug-in version of its Japanese-built X-Trail, that closes the door on a mid-sized PHEV SUV for the brand’s local lineup for now.
Automotive News reports Nissan will bring a pair of electrified Rogue models to the US in the next two years, as part of its plans to introduce 27 electrified models worldwide by 2030.
The Rogue PHEV will reportedly hit American showrooms in late 2025, followed by e-Power versions in early 2027.

No e-Power models are currently available in Nissan’s US lineup, which leaves the brand without any hybrids there; hybrid versions of the previous-generation Rogue and Pathfinder were offered there, however.
The upcoming Rogue PHEV will reportedly share powertrain technology with the Outlander PHEV from Alliance partner Mitsubishi.
The Outlander PHEV is sold in Australia and the US, and it features the same powertrain in both markets.
It uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a pair of electric motors, which are fed by a 20.0kWh lithium-ion battery.
Total system outputs are 185kW of power and 450Nm of torque, though a recently revealed update for the Outlander PHEV sees system power upped to 225kW.
In the US, the Rogue is currently sold with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 150kW and 305Nm.
Nissan has yet to confirm whether Japanese-built X-Trail models will get a PHEV powertrain. Petrol Rogue examples are currently built at Nissan’s plant in the US state of Tennessee, though it’s likely production will move to Mississippi when the PHEV version arrives.
Automotive News reports Nissan’s Mississippi plant is currently undergoing a US$500 million (A$747 million) makeover to prepare it for the production of next-generation electric vehicles (EVs).
If there is an X-Trail PHEV coming, it’ll likely be a long time before we see it as the Japanese-built X-Trail launched considerably later than its Rogue counterpart.
The current-generation Rogue went on sale in the US in late 2020, while its X-Trail counterpart didn’t reach Australian showrooms until May 2022 and Japanese showrooms in July 2022.
