The Repair Shop fans were moved to tears after a woman’s ‘life-saving’ book was restored against all odds during Wednesday’s episode.
Jennie Jewitt-Harris from Surrey brought expert Chris Shaw an old children’s book in for repair, and the item had an extraordinary backstory.
Presenting Chris with the book, Jennie revealed the book was an eighth birthday present to her father Tony back in 1943.
As she pulled back the cover to reveal a birthday message inscribed inside, Jennie then shared the remarkable history of the book as she confessed it saved her father’s life.
Recounting the incredible anecdote, she told Chris: ‘In 1944, my dad was lying in bed in his home in Chingford, and Hitler dropped a bomb to try and hit the reservoirs and hit the front and the roof of my dad’s house.’
She continued: ‘And he was found lying with this book on his chest and a big shard of glass sticking out at the back of the book, which pierced well into the book.’
As the camera focused in on the pierced hole in the book, Jennie added: ‘This is the book that saved my dad’s life.’
Explaining what she wants to do with the family heirloom she told Chris: ‘I would love to be able to hand it on to my kids and for their kids to tell the story.’
Viewers of the show were then taken on an emotional rollercoaster as Chris worked to repair the book’s worn condition.
During the course of the episode Chris reattached the books spine, mended its pages and refreshed the cover as he returned the item to Jennie in its renewed from.
In awe at the restored item she was left in awe after seeing the item: ‘It’s the same, but it’s different!’ she exclaimed, before adding: ‘It looks strong. What magic is this!’
‘I’ve missed the book and I’ve missed my dad even more. That object signifies his story.’
And fans couldn’t hold back their tears as they took to Twitter with their emotional responses.
They wrote: ‘I’m watching #TheRepairShop. The story behind that book has me welling up. A book that saved a life getting a new lease of life’;
What a story about the book!’; ‘The book! It’s dusty in here.’
Last month The Repair Shop fans were left ‘in bits’ when they heard the ‘heartbreaking’ story behind a woman’s teddy bear who escaped a deadly house fire against all odds.
Viewers became emotional while listening to Camilla Greenwood talk about her stuffed animal, the only survivor of a house fire which sadly claimed the life of Camilla’s mother Linda.
Camilla said of the bear: ‘He was given to my mum when she was little and he was with her throughout her childhood.’
‘Then when I came along, he was always kept in my room and he has sort of both in my life.’ Speaking about her late mum, she went on to say: ‘It has always just been me and my mum since I was six months old and she was a very special woman.’
Camilla became tearful as she said: ‘It’s important for me to try and rescue at least something from all of our memories that we built together.’
