Around 100 UK Labour Party activists are campaigning for Kamala Harris in U.S. swing states, raising concerns of election interference and potential violations of American electoral laws.

In a move stirring international controversy, the UK’s governing Labour Party has reportedly dispatched around 100 activists to the United States to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris in critical swing states. The effort has led to accusations of election interference and possible violations of U.S. election law, with prominent figures on both sides of the Atlantic weighing in.
The revelation came through a now-deleted social media post by Sofia Patel, Labour’s Director of Operations. Patel’s post invited Labour Party staff to campaign in states such as North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, promising paid accommodation for volunteers. “I have nearly 100 Labour Party staff (current and former) going to the U.S. in the next few weeks,” Patel wrote, before offering additional spots for North Carolina.
What does one do after #LPConference? I’ve taken myself to do my bit to stop Trump winning.

The move has sparked sharp criticism from political figures in the U.S., including Elon Musk and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who suggested the UK government should focus on its own domestic issues rather than interfere in U.S. elections. Greene specifically pointed to potential breaches of U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC) rules, tweeting, “Foreign nationals are not allowed to be involved in any way in U.S. elections. Please go back to the UK and fix your own mass immigration problems that are ruining your country.”
Under FEC rules, foreign nationals are allowed to volunteer for U.S. political campaigns, but they cannot be paid, donate money, or hold leadership roles in the campaign. While Labour Party officials have claimed that their staffers are participating in their own time and being funded by the Democratic Party, questions remain about whether these actions fully comply with U.S. law.
As reported by NBC15 News, Patel had previously campaigned for Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential run. However, the scale and organization of the current campaign effort have raised concerns about foreign involvement in U.S. elections, with the Center for American Rights reportedly considering filing a complaint with the FEC.
British critics have also weighed in on the issue. Nigel Farage, former leader of the Brexit Party and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, criticized the Labour Party for risking diplomatic tensions, especially if Trump were to win the 2024 election. “This is direct election interference by the governing Labour Party, and particularly stupid if Trump wins. Who is paying for all of this?” Farage asked.
The controversy comes as Kamala Harris faces an increasingly challenging electoral landscape. Reports from The Washington Post last month revealed that senior Labour-linked strategists were advising Harris’s campaign on how to regain support from disaffected voters. However, the overt involvement of Labour Party staffers on the ground has raised the stakes.
With accusations of interference mounting, prominent American conservatives, including Senator Tom Cotton and former White House advisor Dr. Sebastian Gorka, have called out the Labour Party’s involvement, framing it as yet another reason to support Trump’s candidacy. Gorka criticized the move as an inappropriate and unprecedented level of foreign influence in U.S. elections.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the controversy surrounding Labour’s involvement in U.S. politics is expected to intensify, adding another layer of complexity to an already high-stakes political battle. Whether the FEC decides to investigate potential violations remains to be seen, but the implications for U.S.-UK relations could be significant.
