UK tourists face a new £6 charge each and every day in Majorca, they have been warned. In Majorca in the Balearic Islands, proposal has been put forward to charge tourists up to seven euros a day for the use of their rent-a-cars.
The Mallorcan Nationalist Party, Mes, announced last week that they wanted to introduce a rent-a-car surcharge of between two and seven euros a day in the European Union holiday hotspot in an effort to raise funds for public transport.
The surcharge would be levied on the number of kilometres travelled by the vehicle per day. “The more kilometres you travel, the more you pay,” Mes said in a statement. The move comes at a time when the island is trying to fighting traffic gridlock with rent-a-cars being blamed as one of the major reasons for the traffic “saturation.”

Responding to the new charge, a Brit fumed online saying: “Ridiculous idea and won’t ever even be seriously considered. Rental cars are only a small part of the problem and are already exceedingly expensive on the island as it is.
“Real issue is residents have too many cars, driving too much and poor road planning. In other countries… residents and car owners are taxed more. Here we go for tourists again? Pffff.” And a second agreed with the sentiment.
They said: “Proposals to increase taxes on hotel rooms (last week) and rental cars (this week) will not solve the problems of too many tourists and too many cars. Stronger and more creative measures are the only way. Increasing taxes is a very lazy and ineffective solution.”
In August, tourists were warned of significant disruptions to the island as it struggled with what locals described as “out of control” traffic jams. The roads became so congested, it caused widespread delays and frustration among residents and holidaymakers.
The situation became so severe that local authorities issued warnings to tourists, advising them to plan their journeys carefully.
