White Heath Elementary School in White Heath, Illinois celebrated the arrival of an Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine with a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 9, according to a Decatur Tribune report.
The vending machine, a first for Piatt County, dispenses age-appropriate books instead of snacks and serves as an incentive for students.
“White Heath Elementary School is so grateful for the opportunity to receive a book vending machine,” White Heath Elementary School Principal Maggie Woodham told the news outlet. “The students were very excited and can’t wait to pick out their own book. We appreciate the [Heart of Illinois Community Foundation] for helping us get books into our students’ hands.”
Students can earn gold coins for good behavior and academic achievements. The coins can be used to select a book of their choice from the machine, which they get to keep.
The book vending machine is stocked with books purchased from Hartfield Book Company, a local bookstore. The HICF partnered with Hartfield Book Company with the hope of fostering a love of reading and making the bookstore a destination for students.
