BOXLEY, Ark. (KY3)—Tourists are gathering with binoculars and cameras to see the elk migration firsthand on the stretch of Arkansas Highway 43.
Donna and Tim Carr traveled three hours from Pangburn, Arkansas, to Boxley Valley, Arkansas, just to see the migration of Rocky Mountain Elk.
The Carrs took their first adventure to the area two years ago and have returned yearly.
“Last year, we were out on our anniversary week, just out riding around and found this place,” said Tim Carr.
Decades ago, Rocky Mountain elk were introduced to the Newton County, Arkansas, area. Since then, vishave gatheredgather along Highway 43 to catch a glimpse of the creatures up close.
“Our first electric magazine that comes out will spotlight the elk in Boxley Valley. So we just wanted to come and see,” said Donna.
Elk are wild animals, and around this time of year, it’s mating season, so they could be a bit more aggressive.
“Keep a safe distance,” Donna says, “You’ll definitely need some binoculars.
