SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — A South Bend bookstore faces a quick deadline to stay open.
The store posted on social media last week.
The owner says they have to sell more than 5,000 books by the end of the month or they will be forced to close.
Brain Lair Books is a book store with a mission of uplifting marginalized voices, but is now working to clear the shelves.
The owner, Kathy Burnette, discovered the bookstore was short $25,000 this month.
She contributes to hardships hitting the store, like other ways to buy books such as Amazon and the recent increase in book bans.
Books have always played a big role in Burnette’s life as she was a librarian and teacher for years.
However, she said she never imagined opening her own store.
She says it just happened, and now after a hard year, she was preparing to give it up.
However, the community had other plans.
“I’ve just seen the Community step up to help us and it says to me that my work is not done which I was thinking OK my work is done so let’s close the store. Let’s just be done but they’re saying no we still have work to do it’ll just look a little bit different going forward,” says Burnette.
The goal remains to sell 5,000 books before October 31st.
