Four convention bureaux with strong space industries around the world have come together to form a network – focusing on the development of the aeronautics, astronomy and space industries.
The Space Cities Network was announced at the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress in Abu Dhabi.
The four convention bureaux are:
- Lausanne Montreux Congress – Lausanne, Switzerland
- ChristchurchNZ Business Events – Christchurch, New Zealand
- Houston First Corporation – Houston, United States of America
- Seoul Tourism Organisation – Seoul, South Korea
The alliance will involve a collaboration between universities, research centres, government agencies and corporations. For such a new and rapidly developing field, knowledge sharing is particularly important.
The Space Cities Network will be made up of a select community of well-regarded, connected and influential people who are locally and internationally recognised in their field of expertise.
The value of the global space economy is forecast to grow to $1.8tn by 2035.
Claire Hector-Taylor from ChristchurchNZ Business Events and co-chair of the Space Cities Network commented: “Cities will play an integral, legacy role as hubs for events supporting the space community, hosting conferences, summits, and meetings that bring together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers.”
The network will be supported by destination marketing organisations from the four cities, which are ready to increase their space communities with new bids and attract more international space events to their respective destinations.
Space Cities Network fellow co-chair Gerald Howard from Lausanne Montreux Congress, Switzerland said: “Space is the mirror of humanity and of our community ,,, Our community, working collectively with space experts can be one of the keystones of it, and the Space Cities Network is there to help facilitate that.”
