Journalist turned author Michael Davies was back in Rugby on Sunday for an exclusive event as part of Rugby Literary Festival.
Born in Northampton and a long-term resident of Long Buckby, Michael now lives on the north-west coast but is a frequent visitor to the area.
The official launch of the book Thin Ice is this Thursday, (October 24) but the festival audience was given a sneak preview and, through Rugby bookshop Hunt’s, the chance to buy an early copy and get it signed by the author.
In conversation with Rugby journalist Richard Howarth and with questions from the audience, Michael spoke initially of his time in journalism, scriptwriting and how an interest in his youth in the work of thriller writer Desmond Bagley led to his big break as an author.
When an unfinished work was found among his archive material, Michael was invited to prepare it for publication, which led to the publication of Domino Island, in 2019.
The success of this led to publishers Harper Collins inviting him to produce a new book to mark the centenary of Bagley’s birth, which saw the release of Outback last year, keeping the key character of Bill Kemp but in a new work under his own name.
And this week sees the third book, Thin Ice.
During the afternoon, Michael spoke about his writing process, what it was like to work on a previously unknown book by a legendary name in the publishing business – and what he’s got coming up next, giving Sunday’s audience an exclusive outline of what that would be.
