Nicholls State University-based humanities journal “Chênière” released its eighth issue.
The “Chênière Journal” welcome pages states, “The name Chênière…works as a metaphor for knowledge. Like Chênières, knowledge is temporary, built up over time in a gradual way.”
Summer Bourg authored the first article of the eighth edition titled “Sofia Coppola’s Auteurship and The New Wave.” In this article, Bourg explores the ways Sofia Coppola utilizes silence and ambiguity to convey emotion in her films.
Mary Cali authored the second article of the eighth edition titled “Comparing Imagery in American Poetry and Art.” The inspiration for this article sprouted from Cali’s American Literature class with Dr. Michael Martin. Dr. Martin distributed a list of topics to choose from for one of Cali’s assignments.
“I picked the one comparing early American poetry to the Hudson River School collection of paintings. I enjoyed skimming through both the poetry and the paintings,” she said.
Cali said this assignment made her “conscious of both the meaning of the poems and the focus on nature in both art and literature.”
Erin Whittington authored the third and final article of the eighth issue titled “The American Dream Reflected Through Film.” Whittington dissects the reasoning for the enjoyment of the Western genre of films. She attributes much of this enjoyment to the audiences living vicariously through the characters displayed on screen.
Cali encouraged the students and faculty interested in reading the eighth edition of the Chênière Journal.
“For those interested in diving deeper into film, literature, history, or the like, it is a great resource that contains the works of many intelligent student authors,” she concluded.
