As the weather turns brisk and the clocks are set to go back, those itching for a getaway have a choice between chasing some winter sun abroad or embarking on a quintessentially British autumnal staycation.
Northumberland, England’s most northerly county, boasts a host of beloved staycation destinations, including the tranquil village of Corbridge and Bamburgh, crowned the UK’s “best seaside resort”.
Alnwick, a “fairytale” market town in Northumberland, is another must-see spot, perfect as a home base for exploring the wider region.
Rich in history, Alnwick dates back to the 7th century. The town thrived as a traditional market hub on the Great North Road during the 18th and 19th centuries, largely due to the presence of Alnwick Castle, a grand medieval fortress that stands guard over the River Aln.

To fend off Scottish incursions, the town was encircled by a tall wall with four gateways, two of which remain today. One of these, Pottergate Tower, has been converted into an opulent holiday let, offering guests a unique view of the castle, reports the Mirror.
And for Harry Potter enthusiasts, Alnwick Castle might strike a chord of recognition it served as a backdrop for scenes in both the Philosopher’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets films.
Harry and his schoolmates honed their broomstick flying skills in the Outer Bailey, which also served as Harry’s training ground for Quidditch. As you wander around the castle’s courtyards and baileys, you’ll recognise them as the backdrop for numerous scenes featuring Harry, Ron, and Hermione en route to class, Hagrid’s hut, and the Forbidden Forest.
Another must-visit spot is Alnwick Gardens, a modern garden boasting everything from water features and a bamboo maze to treetop walkways and a separate garden teeming with deadly plants.
The gardens are also home to the world’s largest treehouse. This 6,000sqft structure, aptly named The Treehouse, doubles as a unique restaurant and wedding venue, complete with rope bridges, fairy lights and handcrafted furniture.
