UK holidaymakers have shown that despite a raft of protests in Majorca and Tenerife over tourism crowds, they are determined to seek the sun whatever the cost.
Residents of the EU holiday hotspots have been left licking their wounds after UK tourists “ignored” their calls for action.
Despite the flurry of protests across the beloved holiday islands, bookings have actually spiked in sunsoaked spots such as Majorca, Ibiza, and Tenerife. Brits have been picking Spain as their last-minute holiday destination, with TravelgateX, a travel booking platform, revealing some telling figures.
The stats are in, and they’re showing a whopping 27 per cent jump in holiday bookings to the Balearic Islands when compared to the same time frame in 2023. The Balearic Islands have even clinched the sixth spot for overall Spanish bookings from October 7 to October 13, according to TravelgateX’s data.
Brits have been snapping up Spanish holidays, with around 20 per cent of all bookings to Spain made in the final 90 days before travel. A significant chunk of these, 16 per cent, were booked between 15 and 30 days prior to jetting off, with regions like Catalonia enjoying a hefty 20 per cent boost in bookings.
Andalusia has seen bookings soar by 16 per cent, while the Canary Islands have enjoyed a 15 per cent increase. Madrid’s bookings went up by 13 per cent, and Valencia saw a 10 per cent rise.
When it comes to who’s travelling, couples makeup 49.5 per cent of the bookings, opting mostly for short breaks ranging from two to five nights.
TravelgateX revealed 54 per cent were made by Spaniards, with Brits accounting for 18 per cent. The central government delegate in the Balearics, Alfonso Rodríguez, has spoken out over the demonstrations after unrest among locals.
“The situation we saw in Caló des Moro fits in with some of the complaints that are made to establish certain limits and to avoid overcrowding and with the policy of this Government Delegation” he commented earlier this summer.”
He went on: “With prior communication to this government delegation, which has the will to guarantee the right to demonstrate and which also shares many of the demands, all this would not have happened.”
