New decade, same intentions.
The first trailer for a “Cruel Intentions” reboot dropped Thursday, promising all the intrigue and teen-angst of the original, only in episodic format.
The upcoming Prime Video series stars Sarah Katherine Hook as Caroline, the scheming step-sister to Zac Burgess’ heartthrob villain Lucien. At the center is a similar sinister bet involving deceit, sex and, of course, cruelty.
The trailer previews a modern take on a cult classic. The original, which premiered in 1999 starred real-life couple Reese Witherspoon, as the innocent headmaster’s daughter, and Ryan Philippe, the bad boy intent on seducing her. The star-studded cast also included Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair.
Where the original followed a group of privileged prep-school teens, the new film superimposes the plot onto modern campus Greek life. The new Witherspoon is Savanah Lee Smith, whose character Annie is caught in the middle of Caroline and Lucien’s perverse wager. Caroline wants Annie, the daughter of the U.S. vice president, to rush her sorority and enlists Lucien to arrange it in the way only he can: seduction.

The series cast is not entirely brand new. Sean Patrick Thomas, who played young music teacher Ronald Clifford in the original film, will cameo in the reboot as a professor seemingly tempted by a tryst with a student.
Prime’s take is actually a remake of a remake − the 1999 movie was a modern retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel “Dangerous Liaisons.”
