Gangtok, Oct 26: With the season’s first snowfall turning Gangtok into a magical winter retreat, tourists are flocking to Sikkim to soak in the snowy vistas.
In response to the influx, the Sikkim government is introducing an “Odd-Even” vehicle rule from November 5, 2024, to manage the city’s traffic more effectively during the tourist boom. This measure, rolled out under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, applies to both private and government vehicles, with even and odd-numbered vehicles permitted on alternating days based on the last digit of their registration. Vehicles with registration numbers ending in odd digits (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) can operate on odd-numbered dates, while those ending in even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) can drive on even-numbered dates.
The new rule, aimed at easing congestion on Gangtok’s narrow, bustling roads, will stay in effect indefinitely, adapting as needed to the city’s traffic dynamics. Exceptions are made for weekends and official holidays, allowing tourists and residents some flexibility to explore the city’s winter charm without restriction on these days. Violators will face penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act, highlighting the government’s commitment to keeping Gangtok safe and accessible for all.
As winter tourism heats up, Gangtok is gearing up to welcome future visitors with open arms—and clearer roads—ensuring a smoother experience in the heart of the Himals.
