AS the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium is currently being refurbished as part of the stadium’s routine maintenance, the eThekwini Municipality has revealed four new major tourist attractions that will be added to the facility.
Sea-facing bungee jumping, a new big swing, a new sky car and a new viewing platform are the four new major tourist attractions announced by the eThekwini Municipality mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba during a media briefing that took place at the stadium on Thursday (October 24). Xaba said the programme is done to ensure that the facility remains world-class and maintains its reputation as one of South Africa’s grandest sporting facilities.

The 15-year-old stadium was built ahead of the 2010 World Cup, and it is currently undergoing upgrades and refurbishments that aim to attract visitors to the facility.
The mayor disclosed, “A few months ago, the council approved R236 million to rehabilitate the stadium which has been in existence for 15 years. We want to assure all our stakeholders that the venue is structurally sound, and it will continue to host major events while the repairs are ongoing. This has been approved and certified by engineers.”
Xaba highlighted that an asset of this size and design requires major upgrades and rehabilitation to ensure that it not only remains relevant and attractive but that it is compliant. “This plan ensures that the structure is safe for residents and visitors, is operational and is aligned with evolving technological needs for efficient and profitable commercial operations. The facility must also be able to effectively respond to the unit’s socio-economic mandate, promote social cohesion and generate revenue,” he added.
