While fans of Harry Potter are quite happy to watch the movies all year round, Halloween is the ideal time to get immersed in all the wizardry and wonder and, with that in mind, research has been conducted to find out the most ‘magical’ filming locations used in the franchise.
And among the top rated places for Harry Potter fans to visit is world famous North East landmark Durham Cathedral, which is rated in the top 10, finishing 8th in the countdown and coming out as the best location in the region, ahead of Alnwick Castle and Goathland Station in North Yorkshire.
The Harry Potter films first burst onto the big screen in 2001, with the Philosopher’s Stone becoming a massive global success and then being followed by the Chamber of Secrets in late 2002. Durham Cathedral was used for many of the Hogwarts scenes in both movies, as stars like Daniel Ratcliffe, Emma Watson and Ruper Grint filmed in the city. Memorable scenes where the cathedral’s cloisters are recognisable include the one Harry flies Hedwig in the snow in his first year, and the spot where Ron vomits slugs in the Chamber of Secrets.
The list of Harry Potter’s most magical filming locations was compiled by The Digital PR Agency, who launched a new initiative to uncover the places that fans are most eager to visit. From Hogwarts’ majestic grounds to charming wizarding villages, this research aims to highlight the must-see spots for Potterheads worldwide.
Durham Cathedral, also used for a scene where Professor McGonagall, played by the late Maggie Smith, taught students to transform animals into water goblets. came out on top for the North East and made the overall top 10, thanks to it garnering an impressive 86,612 hashtags on Instagram and 1,633 TikTok posts.
The glowing review of the landmark reads: “Its towering architecture and historic atmosphere perfectly capture the magical world of Hogwarts, making it a must-visit destination for fans eager to experience a piece of the wizarding universe.”
The overall list was topped by Glen Coe, with Piccadilly Circus in second and London Zoo in third.
