An Edinburgh baker has seen his new online business soar after turning his hobby into a successful online company.
Scott Anderson, 37, from Southside, decided to launch Bigd0gbakes, after trying his baked goods out on family and friends, and now he’s proving so popular he’s expanded where he delivers.
Bigd0gbakes is located in Gilmerton, where he initially only hand delivered his goodies in the postcode of EH17, but has since grown and opened up to five or six more areas up to EH20. Scott revealed that he doesn’t mind delivering if locals live just outside the selected areas – and even better if customers are willing to collect themselves.
Scott balances his new business, which started in early July, with being a full-time chef, working in a restaurant just outside the city. His baked goodies have taken off so much he told Edinburgh Live he doesn’t know whether he can carry on his current job as it takes up so much of his time.
As something that started as a hobby, Scott and his wife Keri decided to test the waters after family and friends complimented his craft. Scott said: “I used to get a lot of compliments, people said I should form a bakery.
“I never really believed in myself and I thought people were just being nice and then I got to the age that I am, I have two children and I wanted to show them that with a bit of hard work you can do something for yourself and be passionate about something and we gave it a go and it’s taken off quite a bit”.
He currently sells weekly boxes which you can buy, starting at £12.50. As well as a bespoke box which requires a minimum order of two boxes, coming in at £15. You can also order a two-tier cake for £40 or direct message him for bulk orders on Instagram.
“I do weekly boxes so it’s different every week,” he said. “I try to change it up as much as possible but I’d say I’m most known for doing cookies, brownies, brookies, blondies, those kinds of indulgent naughty things.”
Scott previously had a Staffy Boxer mixed dog named Torro, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. His brand logo is a painting of Torro that one of Scott’s friends kindly made and said that this was his attempt to keep his legacy going as he was “an excellent dog”. Scott also revealed that his wife’s nickname for him and his son is ‘big dog’ and ‘wee dog’ so the business name Bigd0gbakes has a heart-warming touch from both angles.
Scott commented further on the future of his baking business, he said: “I would be excited to try to find some commercial kitchen space to be able to accommodate the things I do to be able to offer things to cafes or restaurants.
“I was just in Spain, they have a specific cheesecake which I’m trying to formulate a recipe for as I think it would be something people would like and it would take it off. I’ve got so many ideas but right now I’m just limited by space and time. I do my cooking from home.
“I hope to eventually have a premise, this didn’t start as a fully formulated plan, it was more testing the waters and seeing what happened and now I need to make a plan which is a great thing.
“Initially I would like to ship at least Edinburgh wide if not Scotland wide then hopefully nationwide. I would love to have a bakery of my own where I can see the big dog logo above the door and also serve people coffee and nice bakes. Maybe even some savoury stuff as well because that’s where i come from. That’s my background, just a hobby that’s turned into something really good and I’m really excited.”
