According to reports from the French Libération publication, a terrorist operating in Algeria’s Djanet area screamed Allahu Akbar and Long live Palestine while murdering a Swiss tourist outside a cafe in early October.
Djanet, situated in southeast Algeria, is the capital of Djanet District and Djanet Province. This oasis city is approximately 412 km south of Illizi.
Djanet, an oasis in Algeria’s Sahara desert, is attracting more tourists interested in its unique desert scenery. The recent implementation of visa-on-arrival in 2021 has significantly boosted its appeal. More than 4,000 visitors have already visited this desert gem, which is situated over 2,300 km southeast of Algiers. These tourists are not only drawn to Djanet itself but also to the captivating Tassili n’Ajjer, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The attacker slit the woman’s throat. She died on October 11.
Algerian police were able to apprehend the suspect using helicopters and a large number of officers after he fled the scene. Algerian police also circulated posters and asked citizens to assist in arresting the terrorist.
According to news reports, the man also tried to attack more tourists after the murder but was unsuccessful.
Switzerland’s Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday told the AP that it had been in contact with Algerian authorities about the “violent death” of an unnamed Swiss citizen on Oct. 11.
The three children, along with friends traveling with the victim’s family, returned to Switzerland.
