The North American premiere of Charlie McDowell’s drama film The Summer Book turned into a blended family affair for the director.
Not only were the stars of the movie on hand, which was led by acclaimed actress Glenn Close, but also the filmmaker’s famous parents, Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, who divorced in 1990, and stepfather Ted Danson, who has been married to his mother since 1995.
With all the history between the foursome, the red carpet lit up with various pairing the family that began with Danson and Steenburgen all snuggled up next to each other.
The Cheers alum oozed casual-cool in dark blue jeans, a plaid blazer over a light blue dress shirt, and brown leather shoes, while his wife of 29 years broke out her autumn look in a brown suede skirt, a furry, light tan top over a white tee, and dark brown, knee-high boots.
Danson had his gray hair pushed back off his face for the event, as for Steenburgen she had her long brown locks flowing long past her shoulders with bangs and a subtle center part.
The filmmaker, who served as director of The Summer Book, looked cool and stylish in a black suit with a white t-shirt, black Adidas sneakers, and his hair closely cropped to his head.
He and his dad spent much of their time together in the spotlight of the red carpet arm-in-arm, all while they chatted and laughed.
In fact, at one point they both burst out into laughter as they were still linked with their arms.
The A Clockwork Orange actor stepped out in a casual ensemble consisting of black Khaki-style pants with a matching hoodie and shoes, along with a green baseball cap and dark sunglasses.
The Horsforth, West Riding Of Yorkshire, England native also brought long his sons Seamus Hudson McDowell, 15, and Beckett McDowell, 20, whom he shares with artist wife Kelley Kuhr.
Also there for the family outing: McDowell and Steenburgen’s daughter Lily McDowell, 43, who wore a back suit with a green top.
Charlie’s wife, actress Lily Collins, didn’t appear to be able to make it to the Hollywood premiere, after being by his side at previous promotional events such as special screening of The Summer Book at the BFI Film Festival in London on October 12.
The couple had only just celebrated their three-year wedding anniversary last month with the Emily In Paris star sharing a tribute to him in a gushing Instagram post.
‘Happy anniversary to the man who makes me laugh harder than anyone. Three years held in your arms has been the greatest gift’ the actress penned. ‘Barefaced and in a basic tee, you make me feel like the most special human on the planet. I adore you @charliemcdowell. More than I know how to say.’
Charlie McDowell directed the production while working with a screenplay by Robert Jones, who based the film on the 1972 novel of the same name by Tove Jansson.
The cast is led by Glenn Close, and also features Emily Matthews, Anders Danielsen Lie, Ingvar Sigurdsson, Pekka Strang, and Sophia Heikkilä.
The story follows Sophia, and imaginative and curious eight-year-old who spends a summer with her father and her grandmother on the island in the Gulf of Finland after Sophia’s mother passes away.
The trio come to terms with the loss while exploring the island, talking about life, and enjoying each other’s company.
The film explores the relationship between a child and their grandparent, and the universal truths about youth, age, and mortality.
Glenn Close plays the grandmother, Emily Matthews plays Sophia, and Anders Danielsen Lie plays Sophia’s father.
Danson, 76, and Steenburgen, 71, first met in 1983 when Danson auditioned to play Steenburgen’s husband in the drama romance film Cross Creek.
At that time, the Cheers star was married Casey Coates, while the Time After Time actress was married to Malcolm McDowell.
While Steenburgen landed the lead role of aspiring author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for the Cross Creek production Danson did not, but they would reconnect about a decade later when they starred together in the adventure film Pontiac Moon (1993).
It was during the filming that sparks began to fly and they proceeded to date for about two years before deciding to get married on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts in October 1995.
They eventually got married on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts in a star-studded event of about 150 guest in October 1995, which included then-President Bill Clinton, Bruce Springsteen, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Tom Hanks, and Jack Nicholson.
The couple both came into the romance with two children from previous marriages, with Danson sharing daughters Kate, 44, and Alexis, 39, with is second wife Casey Coates, while Steenburgen shares daughter Lily, 43, and son Charlie, 41, with ex-husband Malcolm McDowell.
