The seaside might not be your first thought for an autumnal getaway, but a charming coastal town with its own castle could change your mind. Bamburgh, nestled in Northumberland, has been crowned the UK’s best seaside spot by Which? for four consecutive years – and it’s easy to see why.
While the warm summer night may be behind us, visiting the beach in autumn can be just as enjoyable. A crisp beach walk will be sure to blow the cobwebs away and you’ll lalmost certainly have most of the beach to yourself when visiting in October time.
The town is home to the majestic Bamburgh Castle, a Grade I Heritage building that was once the historic capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Over 10,000 years of occupation have transformed the castle from a wooden palisade to the impressive fortress we see today.
In Bamburgh village, just a stone’s throw away from the castle, you’ll find the delightful Lord Crewe pub, known for its seasonal dishes and luxurious fresh seafood, all sourced locally. But Bamburgh isn’t just about the castle.

The RNLI Grace Darling Museum pays tribute to Victorian heroine Grace Horsley Darling, who famously rescued nine men from a shipwreck. For those interested in dark tourism, the Bamburgh Ossuary, located in the crypt beneath St Aidan’s Church, serves as the final resting place for individuals dating back to the 6th century, reports the Express.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating story of their excavation and learn about their histories. But if you prefer a leisurely stroll through charming streets, popping into shops and eateries along the way, Bamburgh has got you covered.
The idyllic village of Seahouses, located on the southern coast of Bamburgh, provides an ideal autumnal walk along the coastline. This six-mile round trip is a perfect day out, with chances to stop for a bite to eat and explore Seahouses.
You can choose to wander south along the beach, adding a touch of thrill as you play in the waves, or opt for the St Oswalds way, which guides you through fields and serene country roads – a top pick for a more peaceful ramble.
