A man has died in a tragic incident while visiting a dangerous tourist hotspot in Bali on Wednesday.
The father of two, Nilesh Mukhi, was swept to his death after a wave knocked him off a cliff at Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool known as a “death trap” because of the numerous deaths that have occurred there.
The 59-year-old was taking photos with his wife Kavita and friends when the wave swept him and his wife out, according to the New York Post.
His wife quickly recovered with minor injuries, while Mr Mukhi was sadly discovered by police the following day in Nusa Dua, approximately 19km from Angel’s Billabong.
“From the information we got from local police, Mukhi and his wife, Kavita, stood very close to the edge to be photographed,” Amin Asghar, president of travel agency Skal International, told the Times of India.
“Since it was a full moon, the sea was rough and there were big waves.
“The driver who was taking the photograph asked the two to move away from the cliff’s edge. But before they could do so, a large wave hit the cliff and dragged Mukhi into the sea.”
The spring, just a short ferry from mainland Bali on the island of Nusa Penida, is popular among tourists for getting Instagram-worthy photos.
According to news.com.au, a similar incident happened in 2018 when Chinese national Qiuwei Anhui was swept away by a wave and drowned while taking a selfie.
In 2016, Aussies Brad Williams and his wife, Lestari, were honeymooning when they were hit by a wave at the notorious spot.
Tragically, Mrs Williams’ body washed up on the shore the next day.
Visitors are encouraged to stay away from the water and to enjoy the view from above, even at low tide.
