Netflix has put out a new horror movie just in time for Halloween, Don’t Move, a thriller with a unique concept that has rocketed to #1 on the service instantly. People want murder movies for Halloween, what can I say?
In a year full of excellent horror films, how does Don’t Move stack up? Is it good? Worth watching? Lord knows Netflix won’t tell you with its internal recommendation system. The answer is…mixed. Here’s the synopsis:
“When a killer injects her with a paralytic agent, a woman must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down.”
As it stands, Don’t Move has a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. While that may seem okay, you may not realize that horror is a genre that generally skews higher with critics, and as such, this score for Don’t Move actually puts it somewhere around the 44th best horror movie of 2024 which is…not terribly good, despite its high profile of being the most-watched movie on Netflix right now. Which translates to being one of the most-watched movies in the country, just based on Netflix’s total number of subscribers.
Fans are less on board. Don’t Move currently has a rather poor 43% audience score and a not-great 5.9/10 on IMDB. And this is likely among mostly horror aficionados who care enough to watch and rate it this early.
As a horror-lover myself, if you want my personal advice…skip it. Yes, this is produced by horror legend Sam Raimi who clearly believed in it, but it’s not directed or written by him. I was in fact curious to see what Kelsey Asbille could do outside of her somewhat limited role on Yellowstone, but when you’re paralyzed for most of a movie your acting range is…somewhat limited. It’s sort of an exhausting concept in practice. I would watch Megan Fox’s Till Death over this, a more fun film with a similar, better concept.
I don’t think I can recommend this when there are so many better horror movies out this year. 43, to be exact. I just wrote up a full list of the 20 best horror movies of the year, and before that, I’ve written lists of the best horror movies on Netflix itself, which would not include this movie. They have done great original horror before like Malignant, but this is not in that tier at all. You can do better, even if this is just 90 minutes of your time.
