Since 1949 Burkhartzmeyer Shoes in downtown Faribault has been keeping people’s feet happy throughout the region.
The store is celebrating their milestone with a big sale Thursday, October 31, 2024 through Saturday, November 2, 2924.
Bruce and Brian Burkhartzmeyer were on a recent edition of the KDHL AM Minnesota program reminiscing about their years in the shoe business.
Bruce said their grandfather worked in a shoe factory in Faribault which closed due to the Great Depression.
Keep in mind this was during the depression but when you think about it the perfect business to get into was shoe repair because people generally couldn’t afford new shoes.
Bruce told KDHL listeners the store actually was located where the current Frank’s Pawn Shop is (formerly Poirier Pharmacy) on Central Avenue when they started in 1949.
Burkhartzmeyer Shoes moved to their present location in 1967.
Both cousins didn’t think they would be in the business after graduating from high school and college.
Brian said he never envisioned becoming a orthotics specialist like his Father, Donald (Buck).
Bruce’s father Al was one of the first people who welcomed me to town in 1987 shortly after I started working at KDHL.
Buck gave me a pair of new shoes when I was chosen for the Book of Golden Deeds Award by the Faribault chapter of the National Exchange Club in 2014.
The late Pastor Craig Breimhorst phoned me and said he wanted me to go to lunch with him because someone we knew was going to be honored but he didn’t know exactly whom.
I wonder if that fib was brought up when he entered the pearly gates of Heaven in 2020.
Burkhartzmeyer Shoes has provided specialized shoes for professional athletes over the years.
The Faribault community is blessed to have a shoe store that is more than a shoe store. Keeping people’s feet happy has been their goal.
The special recognition Thursday through Saturday includes some fun chances to get $10 off any regular priced item in the store.
You can toss two bean bags at the “Burkhartzmeyer” board (constructed by Delisha’s Wood of Faribault) and if one gets in the hole you get the $10 discount card.
The 75th Anniversary Sale will includes some treats in addition to a boot sale, athletic shoe sale and more with lots of giveaways.
