Adam King, who first lept into the nation’s hearts when appearing on the Late Late Toy Show in 2020, is about to mark another Christmas with the launch of his first-ever children’s book.
Adam has worked with his dad David on the book ‘A Hug for You’ , inspired by the story he told on the Late Late Toy Show back in November 2020, at the height of the lockdowns and the pandemic.
He made a huge impression with Toy Show viewers, with his virtual hug that he drew for his teacher and his medical team as they kept their distance during the Pandemic while supporting him in his education and managing his brittle bone condition (osteogenesis imperfecta type III). Now aged 10 and with a very active life enjoying tennis, javelin, shot-putt, arts and crafts and more, he managed to find the time over St. Patrick’s weekend and during his summer holidays to get into full festive mode and dream up the adventures of a Viking Elf called ‘Farron’.
Now ‘Farron’s Adventure’ will be launched at The Book Centre in Waterford City on Saturday, November 9th, ahead of the City’s 12th annual Winterval Festival, with proceeds from the book going to the charity ‘Junior for Juniors’.
The beautiful storybook sees Adam’s mischievous Viking elf ‘Farron’ traversing through Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford, during one of Adam’s favourite festivals, ‘Winterval’. The book is a tale of an epic adventure featuring a friendly elf who is filled with sheer determination and joyous optimism as the ‘saving’ of Christmas sits firmly on his shoulders.
Speaking about his first book, Adam says, “I am so proud of this book. I can’t believe that I’m an author like my Dad! I love reading, and books are a big part of my life. I will really enjoy reading this book to my little sister Sarah and my younger cousins.”
Commenting on the announcement, the Directors of Winterval, John Grubb and Trevor Darmody said, “Waterford celebrates its title as Europe’s City of Christmas this year, and for that reason, we have been working on a variety of different projects to share our city’s heritage and build upon the Winterval Festival even further.
It really is a joy to be involved in the publishing of Adam’s wonderful, fun-filled, festive adventure story. This is a book which celebrates friendship, community spirit and camaraderie – and in many ways, it mirrors the ethos and values of our superb Winterval Festival here in Waterford, making this occasion an extra special one.
We want to wholeheartedly thank Adam for his kindness, generosity and charitable spirit in committing a great deal of time during his school holidays to write this gorgeous story – thank you, Adam.”
‘Farron’s Adventure’ is magnificently illustrated by Dave Duffy and was designed and printed in Waterford, ensuring a guaranteed Irish storybook for children this Christmas.
‘Farron’s Adventure’ is to be officially launched by Adam at ‘The Book Centre’ in Waterford City on Saturday, November 9th at 1 pm. Members of the public, especially children, are invited along to enjoy the occasion.
‘Farron’s Adventure’ is now available for pre-order on thebookcentre.ie/ and will be available for sale from November 9th and throughout the Winterval Festival from The Book Centres in Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny at The Winterval Gingerbread House.
