AVERY COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Governor Roy Cooper visited Grandfather Mountain State Park on Oct. 30, where he assessed the damage from Helene and discussed recovery throughout the region.
As many places are still struggling to get back on their feet one month after the storm, local economies are beginning to suffer, which Gov. Cooper said highlights the importance of tourism

While many roads remain closed, Gov. Cooper said there are still many spots open and accepting visitors.
“There are many places in Western North Carolina where you can still go, and can still enjoy,” Gov. Cooper said. You’ll also be doing something for the people when you come because the tourism economy is so important to this part of the state, so we want to encourage people to come.”
Grandfather was closed to the public for 27 days following Helene, and reopened to the public on Oct. 23 for those interested in visiting.
