King Charles and Queen Camilla might have missed WA on their recent tour of Australia, but West Aussies can still enjoy a brush with royalty this weekend as Sarah, Duchess of York, tours the State to promote her prolific output as an author.
The royal, colloquially known as Fergie, has inked a 22-book deal with Perth-based publisher Serenity Press. A new work, Fabulous Food Art, is due this month.
She told The West Australian her kids’ books were inspired by the idea of “re-parenting” her childhood self.
“If I could give little Sarah a book, I would say the most important thing is never, when you grow up, forget little Sarah … and don’t grow up to think you’re very weird because you have red hair,” the Duchess said.
She now cites “abhorrent” cyberbullying as one of the big issues facing kids today.
“In the ’80s, both the Princess of Wales, Diana, and I had no voice, so whatever the front pages wrote, that was it,” the Duchess said.
“You know, the Duchess of Pork, well, it rhymes with York.
“But, of course, in those days, I believed it. Diana was always super thin, and I was coming behind with a differently shaped body … so I do have empathy towards anyone that’s on social media right now being bullied.”
The Duchess was given a royal welcome at a sold-out event at Joondalup Resort on Friday night and will hold book signings in Bunbury and Busselton on Saturday, at Open Books in Mosman Park on Sunday and at Dymocks Hay Street on Monday.
