A free museum in Washington, D.C. shares the legacy of the White House with an interactive Oval Office and more high-tech exhibits, now open.
The election may be just around the corner, but the next person to sit in the Oval Office could be … you. Well, at least in its replica as part of The People’s House: A White House Experience, a new museum attraction less than a block from the real White House. The free museum opened earlier this fall in Washington, D.C.
Across 33,000 square feet and three floors, The People’s House educates visitors about the history and present of the White House through interactive museum exhibits such as 360-degree projections and talking framed portraits. Different areas bring to life not only the Oval Office, but the Cabinet Room, the Rose Garden, and other spaces, informing of each section’s functions.
“It’s a transformational, technology-empowered experience that is deliberately designed to evolve alongside key moments within each presidency,” said Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association. “Every day, we will embrace creative thinking on how we can transform the space and its galleries to meet the needs of multiple generations and make the experience of White House history accessible for all.”
The creation of The People’s House: A White House Experience was a collaboration among the White House Historical Association, architecture firm Gensler, ,museum design firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates, and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who has been involved in the development of the attraction for over two years.
Reserve your spot on the People’s White House website (say that five times fast!). Special arrangements can be made for field trips or the use of onsite classrooms.
The People’s House museum operates in addition to, not in replacement of, the traditional (and also free) public tours of the real White House.
