Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money has landed in the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls for the expansion of a trail network.
The northwestern Ontario municipality is receiving $249,750 to support a plan to build 10 kilometres of a multi-use trail, install wayfinding signage, provide a parking area with bike racks, and construct a “small skills-building bike park,” according to an Oct. 29 Heritage Fund news release.
The project is the second of a nine-phase building plan for a network of trails to be located in and around the town of Nestor Falls as part of a local tourism strategy to establish the community of 1,000 as a top-tier, multi-use destination. The town hosts about 5,000 seasonal residents.
That’s good news for local MPP Greg Rickford of the Kenora-Rainy River riding and the chair of Heritage Fund.
“We recognize that the targeted investments we make have a lasting impact on local economic development and support the vibrant tourism industry in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls,” Rickford said in the release.
Mayor Gale Black said the investment enhances community well-being and economic opportunities.
“The funds being invested into the expansion of our bike trails will provide our residents and visitors with an exciting new opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in a new way, 12 months a year.”
