“Maxton Hall,” a German-language teen drama about starcrossed lovers divided by class lines, became a runaway hit after dropping on Prime Video in May.
Based on a series of three books by Mona Kasten, many fans wanted to read the original story after finishing the six-episode season. But English-speaking readers hit a hurdle: there was no English translation of the German-language books, unlike the show, which offers subtitles and was dubbed.
For the first time, Kasten’s trilogy will be published in English (with brand new covers!), starting in the summer of 2025.
“While there wasn’t much demand for English translations in the early years, it’s been delightful to see such a growing interest now,” Kasten said in an email to TODAY.com.
There are three books in the “Maxton Hall” series — “Save Me,” “Save You” and “Save Us.” Season 1 of the Prime Video largely followed the events of “Save Me,” which will be published in English July 1, 2025.
“‘Save Me’ is a romance novel that, at its core, is about standing up for yourself, loving yourself, pushing beyond your limits, and fighting for your dreams, no matter how big they may seem. I truly hope readers connect with the story and enjoy it,” Kasten said.
The series follows Ruby Bell (played in the show by Harriet Herbig-Matten), a scholarship student at the fictional school Maxton Hall as she strives to get into Oxford. But when she learns a secret about the affluent Beaufort family, she gets noticed by prodigal son James (Damian Hardung). What ensues is a sweeping teen enemies-to-lovers romance set against the drama and chaos of an elite private school.
“Maxton Hall” Season 1 premiered on Prime Video May 9, and by June, became the the platform’s most watched international original series of all time. It was renewed for a second season just days after premiering.
Season 2, which does not have a release date yet, started filming in June and wrapped in September, per Deadline. Season 2 will feature the events of the second book, “Save You,” publishing in English Sept. 2, 2025.
“I was on set for a few scenes of Season 2, and as readers from Europe may know, the second book is probably the most emotional one of the series. It was both heartbreaking and beautiful — Harriet and Damian’s performances even made me cry (in the best way possible),” Kasten said.
While the fate of “Maxton Hall” beyond Season 2 is unclear, Ruby and James’ story continues in the trilogy with the third and final installment “Save Us,” which is set to come out in English Nov. 4, 2025.
All three books in Kasten’s trilogy originally published in 2018. She calls the newfound interest in the books “overwhelming in the best way.”
“I’m naturally introverted, so having this kind of attention can be a bit anxiety-inducing,” she said. “But I’m truly grateful for all the new readers! It’s been heartwarming to see people connecting with the story in a new way.”
