In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11, Armistice Day for “the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.” In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower changed the name to Veteran’s Day.
In 2014, under President Barack Obama along with the Small Business Administration, National Veterans Small Business Week was created and will be celebrated next week, Nov. 11-15.
According to SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) and the Small Business Administration, there are over 1.7 million veteran-owned small businesses, contributing $1 trillion in total revenue and employing almost 5.5 million Americans.
In Berkshire County the Census Bureau estimated over 250 small businesses are owned by veterans. Few publicize that they are veteran-owned small businesses.
After research, I did find a few, which represent a microcosm of those found in the Berkshire County area. They were:
• Alpine Solar Heat and Hot Water LLC, Stu Besnoff, owner of a solar hot water, photovoltaic systems, and battery storage in Windsor; 9 years, U.S. Navy.
• Berkshire 3D Solutions, Ronda Cyr, owner of a real estate photography business in Lee; 14 years, Air Force.
• Fallen Limbs Designs, Nate Mutti, owner of Fallen Limbs Designs in Springfield, designs cutting/charcuterie boards and other wood products; 26 years, Air Force.
• Town-Green, Steve Coyle, owner and consultant, urban planner, architect, builder and developer in Great Barrington; 6 years, U.S. Marine Corps.
If you have the opportunity to patronize their business, please do. If not, and by chance you cross their paths, thank them for their service.
