QCOSTARICA — Visa and the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) signed a collaboration agreement that seeks to boost the tourism sector in Costa Rica, through data-based intelligence, perspectives, trends and detailed and accurate information, which Visa will share with the ICT through its Visa Destination Insights (VDI).
Under the agreement, the ICT will have access to the Visa platform to improve its statistical analysis and data-driven strategies. This partnership is particularly significant for a country like Costa Rica, where tourism contributes 8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and strengthens collaboration with public sector entities for the benefit of the Costa Rican economy.
The VDI platform offers data-driven intelligence based on aggregated and depersonalized information on Visa card transactions, including consumer trends, cardholder consumption profiles by country of origin, visitor characteristics (business, tourism or transit travelers), types of businesses where they make transactions and average purchase amount, among others.

This information complements the ICT reports on trends, choices and behavior of international travelers.
“This agreement with Visa will allow us to strengthen the quality of the information and analysis that support our promotional strategies, making them more effective in attracting the best prospects in the key markets of Costa Rican tourism. In addition, it will benefit the private sector, with which we will share this information, allowing companies to use this data to make informed decisions and adjust their business plans according to the opportunities of each market,” said William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism.
“For Visa, this agreement seeks to add value to the efforts made by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute to advance its work agenda in the Costa Rican tourism sector.
“In this way, we contribute with valuable information to improve the planning of actions for one of the most important economic engines of the country, both for citizens and for the hundreds of micro-enterprises that benefit from the tourist flow that Costa Rica attracts daily,” said Roberto González, General Manager of Visa Costa Rica.
González added that “We believe that the information provided by the Visa Destination Insights platform will allow us to fine-tune the ICT strategies that lead to further boosting tourism in Costa Rica.”
