A slew of new horror flicks have been added to Netflix recently, but one release comes with a caution for those afflicted by a common phobia.
Netflix introduced the creature feature Sting to its UK streaming service on October 31, bearing the tagline, ‘Your biggest fear just got bigger’. However, US fans have been able to stream the film for a while already.
The plot revolves around a 12-year-old girl who adopts a spider, which then grows unnaturally large and starts preying on all living things within sight.
The film is a product of Blumhouse Productions, the same studio that delivered numerous horror experiences including Get Out, The Purge, Speak No Evil and many more.
The narrative centres on Charlotte, who resides in a rundown apartment with her overworked step-father and secretly takes in a tiny spider she discovers hatched from a peculiar, glowing object that crash-lands at the property. She attempts to conceal the rapid growth of her new pet, but it soon begins to attack the neighbours’ pets and even nearby residents, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Originally screened in cinemas earlier this year, it is now available for streaming on Netflix. However, viewers are cautioned about the content as it may not be suitable for everyone – especially those suffering from arachnophobia.
The film heavily exploits the fear of spiders, following the tradition of other horror classics such as Eight-Legged Freaks.
While some might reel at the sight of grotesque, magnified critters, there are those who can’t get enough of the chills it brings. One movie fan expressed their thoughts on social media, writing: “As it’s Halloween, I watched Sting on Netflix. Don’t watch if you really hate spiders , especially ones that arrive from space!”.
Meanwhile, another review circulating online applauds the film for not solely depending on arachnid-induced fear to unnerve its audience. They remarked: “Sting has all the slickness of a Hollywood Blumhouse production, but with a bit more depth to its characters and more thought given to its scares.”
An opinion piece featured on Rotten Tomatoes echoed similar sentiments, stating: “Sting is not the most original, but it features some good performances and if you’re an arachnophobe, it should provide you will all the terror you could want.”
