Viewers have labelled a new Netflix film the ‘most cringe’ title available on the platform just days after its release.
Hijack 93 briefly entered the top ten of most watched films in the UK on the service after it landed last week but has since received a mixed response.
The film is based on real events with the story following a small group of Nigerian men who hijack a plane in hope that taking the passengers hostage will help them overthrow the military controlled government.
Four members of the Movement for the Actualization of Democracy takeover a flight that contains government officials, businesspeople and citizens. Tense negotiations ensue when the captain is forced to land due to low fuel.
While the film peaked at the eight most watched film on Netflix last week, it has since dropped out of the rankings and left viewers a bit unsure what to make of it.
One subscriber took to social media after watching with a blunt assessment, saying: “Hijack 93′ has to be the most cringe movie I’ve ever seen on Netflix.”
Another suggested that even if the quality is not the highest, it could still be enjoyed by subscribers, as they pinpointed one comedic scene in particular.
“How is no one talking about the binoculars in Hijack 93 on Netflix? Got to be one of the funniest scenes in a serious movie I have ever seen. We watched it last night and we were creasing up!”.
However, one viewer suggested that the acting perhaps isn’t is as bad as some are perceiving and instead is an attempt at showing an authentic performance.
The real life story is often regarded as a clumsy attempt at a hijacking and some have considered if this is what the film is trying to show.
A viewer said: “I watched the news when this event happened but apart from that didn’t know much about it. Reading other reviews I agree that some of the acting was a bit poor but found that more fitting and authentic in this film… these were real people as opposed to plastic ‘actors’ from the usual Z-list.”
