Quentin Tarantino has no time for the Dune franchise.
The American filmmaker, 61, is the brain behind some of cinema’s most iconic releases, with his X-rated movies characterised by hyper-stylised violence, avant-garde editing, and extended dialogue.
Having begun his career as an independent filmmaker with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, he went on to make the likes of Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), and Inglourious Basterds (2009).
When it comes to movies of 2024, however, he doesn’t mince his words when leaving a review.
During an appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, he was asked whether he would consider Dune: Part Two one of the best movies of the year.
According to critics, the sci-fi/adventure flick, starring Austin Butler, Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and Florence Pugh, is definitely up there, having grossed $714million (£553m) at the box office – but Tarantino isn’t so fussed.
‘I saw Dune a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again,’ Tarantino stated.
He continued: ‘I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word “spice” so dramatically.’
Tarantino’s scathing remarks weren’t aimed at Dune director Denis Villeneuve directly, though.
Actually, he just wants to watch some original material over Hollywood remakes.
‘It’s one after another of this remake and that remake,’ he explained.
‘People ask, have you seen Dune? Have you seen Ripley? Have you seen Shogun? And I’m like no, no, no, no.
‘There’s six or seven Ripley books. If you do one again, why are you doing the same one that they’ve done twice already?
‘I’ve seen that story twice before, and I didn’t really like it in either version, so I’m not really interested in seeing it a third time.’
‘If you did another story, that would be interesting enough to give it a shot anyway,’ he concluded.
On Shogun specifically, Tarantino added that he watched ‘all 13 hours’ in the 80s.
‘I’m good. I don’t need to see that story again; I don’t care how they do it. I don’t care if they take me and put me in ancient Japan in a time machine. I don’t care; I’ve seen the story.’
As for movies he does like, Tarantino was a big fan of Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, despite the Joker sequel receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Insisting that he ‘really, really liked it’, Tarantino admitted that his expectations were exceeded, as the film wasn’t the ‘intellectual exercise’ he thought it would be.
‘I really got caught up into it. I really liked the musical sequences. I got really caught up,’ he said of the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga musical thriller.
‘I thought the more banal the songs were, the better they were.’
As for his own work, earlier this year Tarantino reportedly abandoned his plans for The Movie Critic, which was to be his 10th and final project.
Deadline reported that a source confirmed the news, as Tarantino has ‘simply changed his mind’ and is ‘going back to the drawing board to figure out what that final movie will be’.
