Legendary director and producer Ridley Scott is developing a new Alien movie.
After the success of this year’s “Alien: Romulus”, the Hollywood Reporter reported that Scott and his Scott Free Productions company are developing a new movie in the franchise for 20th Century Studios.
“Alien: Romulus”, produced by Scott and his production company, earned $350 million this year worldwide.
It remains to be seen if Scott’s new Alien venture will be a sequel to “Romulus”.
For his role as a producer on Romulus, Scott, who is known for directing such epic films as not only “Alien” (1979), but “Blade Runner” (1982), and “Gladiator” (2000) and its upcoming sequel, “Gladiator II”, saw himself as a guiding force for the film’s director Fede Álvarez.
In a recent interview, Álvarez said Scott’s suggestions on the movie made him “kick the wall” but then realized that his ideas made sense, so he followed his advice.
“I can sniff out something that’s maybe too intellectual, or not intellectual enough,” Scott said. “Knowing the extremes is partly my job. Also, knowing when something is too long or too complex. That’s where I come in as a producer – really, as an editor. In that respect, I’m always respectful of the director, and if you’re respectful, they’ll listen to you,” he added.
Aside from the possibility that Scott would develop a sequel to Romulus, Comic Book reported that another idea could be a sequel to “Prometheus” (2012) and “Alien: Covenant” (2017). The idea of a sequel to those films has been sidelined or delayed several times.
It’s also the case that Scott may be developing something new for his dystopian sci-fi setting, as the Alien franchise gives the director/producer a multitude of possibilities.
Scott’s original “Alien”, starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley was groundbreaking at the time for its blending of sci-fi and horror, which had not really been done before.
In a previous interview, Scott talked about his inspiration for Alien.
“I read Alien as a bit of a first,” he said. “It was so outrageous on its idea and story – possession of a body by a massive insect that will lay eggs in you and create other insects.”
The director wanted to make the movie just as scarier as slasher flicks like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974).
In another interview, Scott said, “In Alien there were no mattes or opticals or cheating – just pure physical effects, which seems to be the best way of achieving reality.”
Currently, Scott is focusing on “Gladiator II”, which is set to open in theaters on November 22.
The movie stars Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Paul Mescal, and Denzel Washington.
